AppyStore is a learning app for children under the age of eight. There are over 100,000 downloads of the app and it has an impressive 4.5 star average rating. The request was made after consultation with experts and considers developmental milestones in four areas: cognitive, linguistic, socio-emotional and physical. The content is child friendly and there is absolutely no advertising.
The videos section is the main part of the app. There are different sections for learning alphabets, phonics, nursery rhymes, crafts, environment, plants and society. There are also sections for common nursery rhymes, Little Krishna episodes and stories, which is the most expansive section. The videos are a mixture of 3D and 2D animations. The videos can be streamed and also be downloaded for offline viewing. The content is available in English and Hindi. There is also a prayer section, with a number of devotional Hindu chants.
For toddlers, under two, there is also a dedicated singing section. There are playtime songs, nursery rhymes and bedtime songs. The songs are divided into sections which also teach sports, alphabets and numbers.
The activities section offers age-appropriate mini-games that allow children to explore basic concepts. These include relative sizes, distances, alphabets, numbers, animals, food items, and vehicles. Each category has a progress bar, which shows how far a child has completed a particular course. Children can continue where they left off. Activities are available for children up to four years old.
What makes the app interesting is that the activities are not straightforward and do not follow a pattern. It is quite interactive and provides additional information. For example, the animals section doesn’t just show different animals and read their names. Instead, kids can find out what a zebra looks like, that elephants like candy cane, that lions live in dens, or that monkeys are mean and like bananas. Children should also choose the right colors for the different animals.

By teaching the concept of more and less, children also learn that water is poured into a glass, juice is stored in a jug, and fruit is kept in baskets.
The advantage of a single app is that various distinct activities for children that were traditionally isolated are presented in a relevant and contextual way, continuing on a single learning curve. For example, a child can get an animal soundboard, a puzzle, and a coloring book in a logical sequence. These various activities are all part of the app, and the child moves from a soundboard to a coloring book and a puzzle in a sequence that continually increases the child’s understanding of a subject.
The content is local, so for example in the vehicles section, children can learn that a car rickshaw has three wheels and hear what it sounds like. The activities are designed in such a way that they never become overwhelming no matter how much time a child spends in the app. After going through most of a subject, a small test is available, and if the child has understood everything, a certificate is issued.
Besides all the content for kids, there is also a section with content for parents, available on the AppyStore website. The section can also be found in the app in the settings menu. An integrated chat allows parents to contact experts. The parenting section includes activities for children, tips for parents and recipes for preparing healthy foods.

There is a section dedicated to parental videos, which is not accessible to children when a child’s profile is selected.
Parents can configure the app with profiles for multiple children of different ages and track each child’s progress through a web dashboard. The basic app provides some free videos. There is a fortnightly trial and the app is subscription-based, with a one-year subscription costing Rs 4,800 while a one-month plan costs Rs 1,200. An ongoing promotional offer is offering discounts. discounts of 45 to 20 percent, with a one-year plan available for Rs 2,700 and a one-month plan available for Rs 975. The premium subscription includes over 25 worksheets delivered to your home each month, an education mentor assigned on an individual basis and a certificate every 6 months attesting to the progress of your children. AppyStore can be downloaded for free from the Play at the store.
